LET’S CHAT ABOUT THE STORY ~ IDEAS FOR TALKING WITH KIDS

Love, Independent Thinking, Conversation

1. Why do you think we sometimes give the people we love ‘pet’ names? (Special names that are not the same as their normal names)

2. Does your family call you any special names that are different from your real name? What do they call you?

3. How do you feel when they call you those names?

4. If you could choose your own ‘pet name’, what would it be?

Listen to the audio book

I’ve heard it said that Halloween
Is when all black cats yowl.
And ghosts glide past all dressed in white
And witches prowl and howl.

But I know better! It’s the night
When harmless tricks are done,
And when with Jack-o-Lanterns bright
We children can have fun.

Bobbing for apples plays its part
And fortune telling, too.
There are just countless pleasant things
On Halloween to do!

And if the ghosts and witches roam,
As many people say;
I’m sure that they are out like us
To join in happy play.

Our woods are very dark at night
I dare not in them play
Although I know most every tree
And every flower by day.

But Halloween I go quite near
And scatter candy sweets.
So when the elves and fairies come
They all will find a treat.

Listen to the audio poem

A fat golden pumpkin lay in the field,
A golden moon rode in the sky.
The pumpkin shouted “Hello there brother!
Who put you up so high?”

The man in the moon smiled a jolly smile
At the pumpkin far below.
“I’ll light up the sky while you light the Earth,
On Halloween, you know.”

So the fat golden pumpkin smiled at the moon,
And the moon smiled back at him.
All through the night till the morning came
And the twinkling stars grew dim.

And each felt content with the task he had
And called it a work of love.
Though one lay low on the cold black earth
And one rode high above.

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration a

On Halloween I took a sheet

And cut two holes for eyes.

Because that night I’d trick-or-treat

And earn my candy prize.

I put it on and made my way

From door to door to door.

I won a lot of treats that day,

And ev’ry house brought more.

But then I turned a corner there

And what, then, did I see

Before me floating in the air?

A little ghost like me!

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration 1

A tiny ghost, so very small.

I asked this little one:

“Is this a trick? Who’s doing that?”

But answer there came none.

I turned and tried to walk away

But looked around to see

The tiny flying ghostly thing

Was sticking close to me.

All night I went and gathered sweets,

I walked both there and here,

But ev’rywhere I went my ghost

Stayed very, very near.

And even after I went home

To count what I’d received,

The ghost refused to go away!

Twas not to be believed!

My bigger brother, name of Tom,

Was clever and well-read,

And when I asked him what was up

He thought a bit, then said:

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration 6

“It’s obvious, to me at least,

What’s going on here, Bro:

The little ghost thinks you’re his dad

And that’s why he won’t go.”

We tried to tell the ghost the truth,

That we were not the same,

But he just hovered in the air,

Obedient and tame.

No matter what we said or did,

The ghost would not disperse.

And so, I knew he’d have to stay

For better or for worse.

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration 4

The ghost went with me everywhere,

To school, to church, at play.

I found that I was liking him

A little more each day.

We soon became the best of friends

And never were apart.

Until there came that tragic day

That nearly broke my heart.

For Ghost and I were walking home

And then we chanced to meet

A stranger; twas about my size

And covered in a sheet!

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration 7

No, not a sheet. It was a ghost!

A real ghost, oh no!

It saw my friend and said, “Oh, dear!

Wherever did you go?

You disappeared on Halloween

And I’ve been worried sick.

But now I’ve found you, so come on,

We’d better go home, quick.”

And now the truth of what occurred

Was very plain to see:

This little ghost thought I was mom

And so he followed me!

But now his real mom had come

To take her son away.

Mom wished me well, then off they went

“Goodbye,” I could not say…

Poems for kids Me and My Ghost illustration 9

But that was many years ago.

I’m all grown up today.

And I’ve not seen my little ghost

Since Mom took him away.

And yet, each year, on Halloween,

In the chill October air,

I feel I’m being followed, but

I look…and nothing’s there.

Waking in darkened gloom,
I work by the light of a blood red moon.
Mixing a potion delicious with fright,
Its green liquid gleaming in wolf’s moonlight.

Thick with goo my cauldron bubbles,
My wand casts a spell; in size it doubles.
Add a pinch of spiders, frog toe, eye of newt,
Now dog’s tongue, bat wool and dragon’s fruit.

The children sleep soundly til a howling they hear,
Then up from above, six small eyes appear.
Hee-hee-hee! I cackle. Add a slip of yew.
Three heads shall deliciously add to my brew!

I’m a scarecrow, I’m not scared

Except on Halloween

When all the naughty ghouls and beasts

Storm through my field of green.

They’re rather cruel, they call me names

It’s tricky to retort

Because my brain is made of hay

Lacks intellect and thought.

I’m just one bone – one spindly stick

A witch flies me away.

“A lovely broom!” she shrieks with glee

“Don’t snatch me, please!” I say.

The monsters find my tattered head.

“Football?” they suggest

I’m feeling rather dizzy now

I think I need a rest!

Vampires cannot drink my blood

My veins are made of straw.

Instead they eat my carrot nose

And leave me on the floor.

My farmer mends my jumbled form

And gives me an upgrade.

“A pumpkin head will suit you well

No need to be afraid.

With hollow eyes and jagged teeth

Oh, this will work a dream!

Now you will scare the ghouls and beasts

Upon next Halloween.”

Communication, Self-Confidence

1. All the naughty ghouls and beasts play with the poor little scarecrow, even though the scarecrow really doesn’t like it! The scarecrow asked the beasts nicely not to play with it, but nobody listened to their polite words. What do you think would have been another good way to try, if the beasts didn’t listen to the scarecrow’s wishes?

Independent Thinking

2. What do you think of the farmer’s solution to replace the scarecrow’s head with a pumpkin? Can you think of some other good things the scarecrow might have done?

I was born a normal babe

No crooked nose or warts.

My family were most upset

“This witch is out of sorts!”

I had no cackle, only cried,

And then they taught me magic.

I couldn’t conjure any spells

My witchcraft skills were tragic!

Flying lessons weren’t so great

My broom’s now in the trash

Turns out I’m afraid of heights

I tend to faint and crash!

And when it comes to potions

I confess I’m having trouble.

My cauldron tends to gurgle up

A toxic form of bubble!

Then there was my black cat, George

Who made my tonsils itch.

“Allergic to a cat?” Mum cried,

“You’re not a normal witch!”

Evil hexes aren’t my thing

I have no cunning streak

My power is my skill to love

They call me, ‘odd’ and ‘freak’!

But I don’t care, I’ve got my friends

I’m happy for a start

I’m non-conformist, so unique

The one witch with a heart!
